Shopify Checkout Extensibility
Checkout extensibility is Shopify's supported replacement for checkout.liquid — UI extensions, branding APIs and Functions instead of editing a Liquid file that is going away. I help Plus merchants move off checkout.liquid before the deadline and build the checkout customisations that actually matter for conversion and operations.
What’s included
The scope of this work
- checkout.liquid to checkout extensibility migration audit: what you have, what maps natively, what needs rebuilding
- Checkout UI extensions: custom fields, delivery instructions, gift messages, trust badges, upsells, B2B PO fields
- Branding and layout configuration via the checkout editor and Branding API to match your storefront
- Post-purchase extensions: one-click upsells and surveys on the Thank You page
- Delivery, payment and discount Functions to carry over rules that lived in your old checkout
- Validation and rollout on a Plus dev store, so the cutover doesn't touch live checkout until you're ready
How it works
From brief to live
Inventory every customisation in checkout.liquid, scripts and apps, and mark what maps natively.
UI extensions, Functions and branding config, reviewed on a dev store with a clear before/after.
Switch the live checkout profile, then monitor conversion and error rates closely for the first days.
FAQ
Checkout Extensibility: common questions
When does checkout.liquid stop working?
Shopify has been winding checkout.liquid down in stages — the Information and Shipping steps already require the new checkout, with Thank You and Order Status pages following. If you're still on checkout.liquid, it's worth migrating on your schedule rather than Shopify's.
Is checkout extensibility Plus-only?
The deep checkout UI extension points and the checkout editor are Shopify Plus features. Thank You / Order Status extensions and the discount, shipping and payment Functions are available more broadly. I'll map your requirements to what your plan supports.
Will migrating change how checkout looks to customers?
It can stay very close to your current checkout — the Branding API covers colours, type and layout density. Some pixel-exact checkout.liquid tweaks aren't reproducible; I'll show you the before/after on a dev store before anything goes live.
Can you keep our third-party checkout apps working?
Most established checkout apps now ship extensibility-compatible versions. I check each one during the audit and flag anything that needs replacing.
